At the first sight が間違いであるケースについて

学校で first などの序数には必ず the や my などの所有限定詞が続くと習ったかと思います。

I have to take the first train.
This is my first visit to Singapore.
I fell in love with her the first time I saw her.

「～を始めてみたとき」という意味で、at the first sight of ～ということができます。

I fell in love with her at the first sight of her.

At first sight はイディオム

At first sight は頻繁に使います。「一目見て」「すぐに」の意味で主に使われます。

I hell in love with her at first sight.

また「一見したところでは」の意味で、最初の印象について話す際にも使えます。

It looks strange at first sight.

イディオムという点で、この at first sight のバリエーションの at first glance は同じで、また at first とか at first hand などもあります。

「一目見て」や「一見したところでは」の意味で、

<誤り> I hell in love with her at the first sight.

のように the を付けてしまうのは間違いです。The を付けてしまうと of ～を期待してしまうので、何か言い忘れられた印象が残ります。
