Different from か different to か different than か

「違う」「異なる」という意味の different は基本的な形容詞ですが、何と違うのか前置詞でつなげるとき、その前置詞が from だけでなくて、to がきたり than がきたりします。

学校では from で習っていると思いますが、その from が実は一番一般的です。ですがイギリス英語では to が、アメリカ英語では than も耳にする機会が多いです。

British English is different to American English.

前置詞が違っても、意味することは同じです。普通は from を使って置くのが良いですね。

Than だけ従属節をもてる

意味的には一緒ですが、than だけ多少特殊です。なぜならば、than は従属節を持つことができるからです。

The situation was different than we had expected.
The situation was different from what we had expected.

しかも従属節の一部は省略することが一般的なので、前置詞を続けることもできます。

It is different than (it was) in the past.
It is different from what it was in the past.
It is different to what it was in the past.

また以前と違うという意味で、different than before は便利な表現ですね。またdifferent from before もよく耳にするので、問題はないでしょう。
