称賛や批判に関するイディオムをまとめます。

A hard/tough act to follow

まねをすることが困難なくらいすばらしい偉業を成し遂げたという意味で、a hard/tough act to follow と表現します。

It’ll be a hard act to follow.

単にすばらしいと言うだけであったら、amazing でも良いのですが、もう少し強調したい場合 out of this world という表現もあります。この世のものとは思えないくらいすばらしいということです。

It was out of this world.

Second to none は誰に対しても二番目にならないということですから、要は一番だということです。単独で一番でなくても別に良いですね。

He is second to none.

多くの人が欲しくて得るのが難しいくらい人気があるものを like gold dust と表現します。

The tickets are like gold dust.

やられた分やり返すことが良いことかは微妙ですが、イギリスでは give as good as one gets と表現します。

He gives as good as he gets.

神経を逆なでするは、get on one’s nerves です。何かむかつく、マジむかつく場合の表現です。

You really get on my nerves.

誰かに手を焼かせたり、迷惑をかけたりを give someone a hard time と表現します。

She would give me a hard time.

茶化す、笑いものにするは poke fun at が使えます。Make fun of も同じ意味になります。

Don’t poke fun at me.

Add insult to injury はひどい目にあわせておいて更に悪い状況にあわせる、泣きっ面に蜂といった意味です。

My car broke down this morning, and to add insult to injury, it stated to rain.

自ら災いを招く、自業自得という意味で、ask for trouble と表現します。

You are asking for trouble.

Aspersion で誹謗中傷といった意味がありますが、中傷するだと cast aspersions on(upon) となります。

I don’t want to cast aspersions on anyone.
