議論中に使えそうなイディオムをまとめます。

Be that as it may

他の意見・陳述も一理あることは認めるけど、やっぱり最初の意見・陳述は変わらない、そういったときに、be that as it may を使います。日本語に訳すと「しかしながら」や「それはともかく」となりますが、別の意見を正しいと認めているニュアンスが訳せてないです。

The unemployment rate has been improved, but, be that as it may, many people are still looking for a job.

手短に言うと、要するに、といった意味で in a nutshell という表現を使います。Nutshell はナッツの殻のことですが、その中に入るくらい少ない言葉で表現するということです。

なので手短に言うと動詞にすると、put something in a nutshell となります。

In a nutshell, everything is wrong.

虫が好きな人は例外として、ミミズのような虫が大量に入った瓶を開けると収集がつかなくなると思います。Open a can of worms で扱いたくない問題を引き起こすといった意味になります。

That would really be opening a can of worms.

好ましくない状況が繰り返されたり、ある問題が別の問題を作り出してどんどん状態が悪くなっているような状況を、in a vicious circle と表現します。悪循環ですね。

He’s caught in a cicious circle.

異なったものの見方や、別の面といった意味で、the other side of the coin と表現します。

I also see the other side of the coin.

昔々金に硝酸をたらして色の変化を見て純度を調べる検査方法があったようで、これに由来して本物・真実・本当の価値を見極めるテストという意味で acid test を使います。

The acid test will come when the team plays the stronger opponents.

自分自身を困らせる状況を自ら作り出している場合、tie oneself (up) in knots が使えます。

He tied himself in knots doing many things.

信憑性に疑いがあっても、真実かは不確かでも、とりあえず信じるというとき、give someone the benefit of the doubt と表現できます。

We gave her the benefit of the doubt.

罰として、何か悪いことしたことを人前で説明させることを強いるといった意味で、be brought/called to account と表現します。

You will be brought to account soon if you commited a crime.

一歩も譲らないで考えを曲げない場合、not budge/give an inch と表現できます。

We’re prepared to compromize, but they won’t budge an inch.

堂々巡りしているとき、go round in circles と表現します。

The discussion kept going round in circles.
